The single decision that shapes a Como wedding is the ceremony hour, and it is almost always earlier than the invitation you have drafted. The mountains take the sun off the water long before the clock says sunset, and which shore you are on changes that by nearly an hour.
Como’s light arrives late and leaves early. The mountains rise steeply from both shores, and they hold the sun off the water until well into the morning and take it back long before the hour the same date would give you in Tuscany. That single fact decides more about a Como wedding than the venue does: a ceremony written for five o’clock and a boat booked for seven is the difference between portraits on the lake and portraits in a lobby.
The villas here each have one vantage that photographs like nowhere else on earth — a loggia, a stair down to the water, a terrace at the end of a cypress walk — and each gives you a narrow window in which to reach it. Some of them are only reachable by water. So the boat, the ceremony and the light are a single problem, and they are solved together or not at all.
We plan backwards from that hour and we say so at the first conversation rather than the week before. It is also why we arrive two days early here without exception: the lake in the second week of June behaves differently from the lake in the second week of September, and the only way to know what your terrace does at your hour is to stand on it at that hour.

Green, full and often hazy, with the mountains still capped. Afternoon build-ups are common and usually break by evening.

Hot and busy. The lake is at its most crowded, the light at its most vertical, and the evening window at its longest.

The best month on the lake. Clear air, warm water, the crowds thinning and the light already turning. It books earliest.

A wooded promontory with loggias on three sides and no road to it. Everything arrives by water, which makes the boat timetable the schedule rather than a detail of it.

On the eastern shore, which keeps its light later in the evening than the western villas do — the single most useful fact about choosing a side of this lake.

What a Lake Como wedding plans around
- Several of the best-known villas are reached by water. Boat transfers are a schedule constraint before they are a romantic detail, and they are booked and timed with the light in mind.
- The road along the western shore is single-lane in places and slow in season. Distances that look like ten minutes on a map are not.
- The mountains shorten the usable evening substantially against published sunset. Plan the ceremony an hour earlier than instinct suggests.
- Civil ceremonies in Italy involve documentation that takes time to prepare; your planner will lead this, and it affects the date more than the photography does.

Those two days are the whole argument. We walk your terrace at the hour of your ceremony, in the month of your wedding, and we come back with the time the sun actually leaves it — which on the western shore in September is well before eight, whatever the almanac says. That figure goes to your planner, the ceremony moves, and the hour between the vows and dinner becomes the best of the day instead of the one that got away.
Travel is quoted at cost and itemised before it is booked. You receive a preview set within seven days, the complete hand-graded set within eight weeks, full-resolution files and a private archive, and a print release that does not expire. Nothing is published without your written consent.

How much does a Lake Como wedding photographer cost?
Our destination wedding commissions here begin at $22,000 for two photographers, two days on site before the wedding and full coverage of the day. Travel is quoted separately, at cost and itemised. Most Como weddings land between that and $30,000 once a welcome dinner and a morning-after session are added.
What time should the ceremony be?
Earlier than instinct suggests, and the reason is the mountains rather than the calendar. Sunset on paper in June is around nine; the sun is off the western terraces well before that. We establish the real hour for your specific villa and date, and the schedule is written backwards from it.
Is a boat worth it for the portraits?
On this lake, yes — it is the one place where getting off the land changes the photographs completely, because the villas were built to be seen from the water. A wooden launch sits lower than a taxi boat and lets us shoot back at you with the villa behind. It needs booking and timing rather than deciding on the day.
Which shore should we choose?
The eastern shore — Varenna, Bellagio’s eastern face — holds its evening light noticeably later than the western one. If your date is in September and your heart is set on a western villa, move the ceremony forward by an hour and you get the same evening.
How far ahead should we book?
Twelve to eighteen months for June or September, which are the two months this lake is famous for and the two that go first. September is the best photographic month here and it books earliest.
Do you handle the documents for an Italian ceremony?
No — that is your planner’s work and they will be far better at it than we would be. What we do is make sure the schedule they build has a portrait window in it that the light will actually be there for.
