Newport is the one place in the United States where you can be married in a building that was designed to look like a French château by someone who could afford to mean it. The Bellevue Avenue houses were built as summer cottages for people with a great deal of money and no interest in restraint, and the consequence for a photographer is rooms with fifteen-foot windows, marble that throws light around, and terraces facing the Atlantic.
It photographs like Europe and it books like America, which is the whole argument. Guests fly domestically, the vendors speak the same language as your planner, and the pictures come back looking like Normandy.
The trade is that these are museums. Access is timed, the routes through the house are fixed, and you cannot decide at six o’clock that the library would be better. We walk the permitted route in advance and plan the portraits inside it, which is a constraint worth knowing about rather than discovering.

Can we be photographed inside the mansions?
Along the route the property permits, yes, and those rooms are extraordinary. What no venue here allows is free run of the house, so we agree the permitted route with your venue contact before the day.
Which month?
September and October — low amber light across the lawns, the Atlantic still warm and the season’s crowds gone. May and June are cool, green and clear, with the ocean side noticeably colder than the lawn at seven in the evening.
How windy does it get on the cliffs?
Enough that veils and Atlantic-facing terraces are a known combination. It is worth planning for rather than fighting — a veil in wind photographs better than a veil pinned flat.
Is the traffic onto the island a problem?
On a summer weekend, yes. It is why we arrive the day before rather than the morning of, and why guest transfers from the mainland need more time than the map suggests.
Harbour or gardens for the portraits?
Both, if the schedule is written for it. The harbour is best early and the gardens are best in the last hour — a day that tries to do them in the wrong order gets neither at its best.
