We photograph destination weddings across Puglia — masserie in the Valle d’Itria, olive groves a thousand years old, and baroque towns of pale limestone. Two photographers, on site two days early, commissions from $22,000.
Puglia is what couples choose when they have looked at a hundred Tuscan weddings and want theirs not to resemble them. The light is harder, the walls are white rather than ochre and the land is flat, which produces a set with more contrast and a cleaner palette.
Puglia looks nothing like the Italy of Como or Tuscany, and that is why it is on this list. It is flat, dry and white — fortified farmhouses of whitewashed stone in groves of olive trees a thousand years old, under a sky that is bigger and a sun that is harder than anywhere further north. The palette is limestone, silver-green and deep blue, and it is one of the cleanest backdrops in Europe.
The masseria is the form. A working estate with a courtyard at the centre, thick walls, cool dark rooms and a terrace that gets the whole of the evening, taken over entirely for a weekend. It gives you what Tuscany gives you at a fraction of the crowding, and it photographs sharper because the light is harder and the walls throw it back.
The heat in July and August is the serious constraint. This is the south, it is dry, and the middle of the day is for the inside of the building. Everything of consequence happens after six.

Warm rather than hot, with the groves still green underneath and the wild flowers out. The best months.
July to August
Very hot and very bright. Hard white light off the stone from ten until six, then a long clear evening.
September to October
Harvest in the groves, warm sea, softer light and a quiet region. Excellent and still underbooked.

What a Puglia wedding plans around
- The region is flat and the driving is easy, which is a genuine relief after the Amalfi coast. Distances between towns are real but the roads are fast.
- Midday in high summer is not workable outdoors, and the masserie are built to acknowledge that. The thick-walled interiors are part of the plan, not a fallback.
- The nearest airports are Bari and Brindisi; most international guests connect. It adds a leg to everyone’s journey and is worth stating on the invitation.
- Whitewash in full sun is extremely bright. Exposure here is set for the stone, not for the sky.

A Puglian wedding is a destination commission from $22,000: two photographers, two days on site before the date, full coverage of the day. Travel at cost, itemised.
The day here has a genuine two-part structure, and we photograph it as two different films. The afternoon is interior — deep shade, thick walls, stone — because outside between ten and six in July is not workable for anyone. The evening is exterior and runs until eleven. A schedule that pretends the middle of the day is usable produces photographs of people squinting.
Preview within seven days, full hand-graded set within eight weeks, full-resolution files, a private archive and a print release that does not expire. Nothing published without your written consent.

How does it differ from Tuscany?
Harder light, whiter walls, flatter land and far fewer weddings. Tuscany is green and rolling and gold in the evening; Puglia is white and level and blue, and photographs with more contrast.
How hot does it get?
Hot enough that the middle of a July day belongs indoors. The masserie are built for exactly that, with thick walls and cool dark rooms, and a schedule that uses them is not a compromise.
When is the best month?
May, June or late September. May and June are warm rather than hot with the groves still green underneath; September brings harvest, a warm sea and a quiet region.
Is it hard for guests to reach?
It adds a connection for most international guests, through Bari or Brindisi. The driving once there is easy — flat, fast roads — which is a genuine relief after the Amalfi coast.
Can the whole weekend happen at one masseria?
That is the usual shape here and the one we would argue for. The estates are taken whole, guests stay in, and the welcome dinner and the farewell lunch happen in the same courtyards.
