An elopement in Venice is a walk, and the walk is the photograph. There are no cars, so the two of you move on foot and by boat between a ceremony and a lunch, and the part of the day that is dead time everywhere else — the transfer — is here the part worth framing. A wooden launch is better for this than a gondola: it is faster, it sits lower in the water, and it lets us photograph back at you with the palazzi behind.
The hour decides everything. From mid-morning the routes through San Marco are dense with people; at six the same stone is empty and the light is coming off the water. We plan the morning backwards from that, and we choose the bridges carefully, because a long train and six sets of steps is a decision rather than an accident. Two witnesses, a celebrant, and a city that has been doing this for six hundred years.

April to May
Clear, cool and bright, with the crowds building. Water levels can be high in spring.
June to August
Hot, crowded and often hazy. Early morning is not merely better here; it is the only quiet hour.
September to November
The best light of the year. Autumn mist on the lagoon at dawn, low gold on the stone, and the city beginning to empty.
What has to be planned for
- Everything moves by boat and then on foot. Bridges have steps. A dress with a long train and a route with six bridges is a decision, not an accident.
- Churches and museums here have their own photography rules, and several prohibit it during the ceremony entirely. These are established with the specific institution in advance.
- The city is genuinely crowded between mid-morning and early evening. Sunrise is the hour that makes Venice photographs look like the Venice in your head.
- Acqua alta is a real seasonal possibility in autumn and winter and is worth a contingency for a November date.

Questions
How much is a wedding photographer in Venice?
An elopement or private ceremony starts at $6,500 for one photographer and three to six hours. A wedding with guests is a destination commission from $22,000: two photographers, two days on site beforehand and full coverage of the day.
Is a sunrise session really worth getting up for?
In Venice it is the difference between photographs of your wedding and photographs of a crowd. At six in the morning the squares are empty, the light comes off the water and the city is briefly what it looks like in paintings. It is the strongest single recommendation we make about anywhere.
Gondola or launch?
A launch, for photographs. It is faster, it sits lower in the water and it lets us shoot back at you with the buildings behind. A gondola is lovely to be in and difficult to photograph from. Both are booked in advance and timed to the light.
What about the bridges and the dress?
Every bridge has steps, and a long train plus six of them is a decision rather than an accident. We plan the route with that in mind, and where it matters we plan it in one direction.
Can you photograph inside the churches?
It depends entirely on the institution, and several prohibit photography during the ceremony outright. We establish the specific rules with your specific church in advance rather than assuming the general ones.
