Wedding photography in Santorini
We photograph elopements and small weddings in Santorini — cliff-edge villas in Oia, Imerovigli and Fira, the village of Pyrgos, and the inland vineyards almost nobody photographs.
One piece of advice matters more than everything else on this page: do it at sunrise. At six in the morning the caldera paths are empty and the light rakes sideways along the white walls. At sunset the same view has a crowd in front of it.
Santorini is the rim of a volcano that collapsed into the sea, which is why the island is a crescent of cliff with a caldera in the middle and villages clinging to the top edge. Everything is whitewashed, everything faces west, and the sun sets straight into the water in front of all of it. There is no more reliable spectacle in European wedding photography.
That reliability is also the problem, and it is worth being direct about. The famous vantage points are extremely crowded at sunset. Oia in particular is packed every evening in season, and a portrait session planned there for seven o’clock in July is a portrait session in a crowd.
The answer is the other end of the day. Sunrise on the caldera is empty, the light comes from behind the island and hits the white walls sideways, and the sea below is still. The best photographs anyone makes on this island are made before eight in the morning, and almost nobody does it.

A rocky headland jutting into the caldera, reached by a path and steps from the village. Open views in every direction; go at sunrise, and in walking shoes.

Fira to Oia caldera path
The footpath along the rim, through Firostefani and Imerovigli and on towards Oia. White walls and the caldera below the whole way; almost empty in the first hour after sunrise.

Oia castle and lanes
The ruined castle at the tip of the island and the lanes of blue domes around it. Packed at sunset, quiet and softly lit in the early morning.

Carved into the cliff with terraces stepping down it. Whitewash in full sun is close to the limit of what a sensor holds, so exposure here is set for the wall, not the sky.

Faces the caldera from Imerovigli, high on the rim, which means the sun goes down into the water directly in front of it and nothing is in the way.
Santo Wines
Winery terraces, Pyrgos
Volcanic vineyards and a terrace above the caldera, with room for a guest list the cliff villages cannot hold. The vines here grow in baskets on the ground, which photographs like nowhere else.

A caldera terrace with a gazebo for the ceremony and a glass-fronted room for dinner. The same view indoors and out, which matters on a day the meltemi is up.

Built into the rock above the old port with a terrace cantilevered off it. Shade indoors at the hour the terrace is unusable, which in July matters.

We plan the route in one direction, downhill wherever the village allows, so nobody is climbing back up in a dress in the heat. We check in advance which of the lanes photographed on the internet are private property, and we agree a fallback for the meltemi, which through July and August can blow hard for days on an exposed western terrace.

Destination Wedding in Santorini
A destination wedding on Santorini has to solve one problem that no other island on this list has, and it is not the light or the stairs. It is the crowd. Oia at sunset in season carries crowds of people along a narrow path, and a portrait session planned for sunset in July is a portrait session conducted among strangers with their phones up.
So we invert the day. The caldera at six in the morning is empty, the light comes from behind the island and rakes sideways across the white walls, and the sea far below is still. It costs you an early alarm on the morning after your wedding and it produces the photographs that made you choose this island in the first place — the ones with nobody else in them. Almost nobody does it, which is exactly why it works.

How many photographs will we receive?
It depends on the day rather than the clock: a full day usually comes to several hundred edited photographs, an elopement fewer. We do not set a minimum, because a number becomes a target — everything worth keeping is delivered.
When will we receive our gallery?
A preview within seven days, then the complete edited gallery within eight weeks for a wedding and four weeks for an elopement, with high-resolution downloads and personal printing rights.
Do you require a deposit to book?
Yes. A short agreement and a booking deposit reserve your date, and the deposit is part of the total, not added to it. The balance is due before the wedding.
What happens if the weather changes?
We plan a covered alternative for the portraits with you before the day and adapt the timing on the day itself. Soft rain and cloud can make beautiful photographs; nobody is sent out into a storm.
