The most useful thing to know is that an Italian summer wedding is shaped by heat and light before anything else: ceremonies move later, dinner runs long into the night, and the day should be written around that from the first draft.

What a Italy wedding is like
Italy’s light changes more from region to region than most couples expect. On Lake Como the mountains take the sun off the water well before the published sunset. On the Amalfi Coast the cliffs face the sea and hold the evening. Tuscany’s open hills give long, low light across cypress lines and vineyards, while Puglia and Sicily are bright, flat and white-stoned, with a hard midday sun that softens beautifully in the last hour of the day.
The architecture asks for different things too. Village churches are old, beautiful and very dark inside, which rewards a photographer who works with available light. Frescoed villa rooms, Roman palazzi and Venetian courtyards are the same. In Venice everything moves by water, so the gondola or the water taxi is part of the schedule rather than a flourish. The masserie of Puglia and the baglio courtyards of Sicily are open, stone and sunlit, and they photograph best when the ceremony is set late enough for the shadows to lengthen.
Italian weddings are built around the table. An aperitivo on the terrace, a dinner of many courses, speeches between them, a cake cut late and dancing after midnight is the ordinary shape of the day, and in the countryside a long lunch sometimes replaces the evening meal altogether. It is a long, generous day, which is why most couples here book full-day coverage and why we plan the hours around the light rather than the clock.
Practicalities
Before you plan
The season runs from May to early October. May, June and September are the months most couples ask for: warm, green or golden, and gentler than July and August, when the heat is serious and the cities and coasts are at their busiest. The south stays warm well into October. For peak summer dates, booking nine to fifteen months ahead is typical.
A civil ceremony in Italy is legally possible for foreign couples, held in a town hall or an authorised venue, but it involves documents prepared well in advance, and a Catholic church wedding involves paperwork through your home parish as well. Many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Italy, which frees both the hour and the place. Your planner or the local registry office will confirm what applies to you.
Fast trains link Milan, Florence, Rome, Naples and Venice, and they are often the easiest way for guests to move between cities. The lakes, the Tuscan countryside and Puglia are car country. The Amalfi Coast road is narrow and slow in season, and Sicily is usually reached by air. A wedding with a welcome dinner in one place and the ceremony in another is common, and we plan travel between them with you.

How much does a wedding photographer cost in Italy?
Our Italian weddings start at €1,450 for Half Day coverage of up to five hours with one photographer, €2,250 for Full Day coverage of up to ten hours, and €2,950 for a Destination Wedding covering the full day. Elopements start at €850. Travel and accommodation are itemised at cost, and your exact quote depends on the date, hours and travel; we send it in reply to your inquiry.
How far ahead should we book a photographer for an Italian summer wedding?
Nine to fifteen months is typical for a Saturday between May and September, and September books earliest in most regions. Weekday and shoulder-season dates are more flexible, so it is always worth asking even at shorter notice.
Can we marry legally in Italy, or should the ceremony be symbolic?
Both are possible. A civil ceremony for foreign couples needs documents prepared in advance, and a church wedding has its own paperwork. Many couples complete the legal part at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Italy, which lets them choose any place and any hour. Your planner or the local registry office will confirm the requirements for your nationalities.
What time should an Italian summer ceremony be?
Later than at home in the south and in the countryside, where the midday sun is hard, and earlier than instinct suggests on Lake Como, where the mountains shorten the evening. We work out the hour for your venue and date and write the day backwards from the light.
Can we combine two regions, such as Rome and the Amalfi Coast?
Yes, and many couples do: a welcome evening in a city and the wedding on the coast or in the countryside. We quote the travel between them at cost and plan the coverage so that each day has the photographs it needs without anyone rushing between trains.
Do you photograph elopements in Italy?
Yes. Our Elopement commission starts at €850 for two hours with one photographer, and includes help choosing the place and the hour, and with any permission a location needs. A quiet morning in Venice, a Tuscan hillside at the end of the day or a terrace above the Amalfi Coast all work well.
