The Atlantic sets the rules here: the light is clearer than the Mediterranean’s, and evenings on the west coast can turn cool and windy even in summer, so an outdoor dinner needs a sheltered plan.

What a Portugal wedding is like
Lisbon is a city of hills, viewpoints and pale façades, many of them faced with painted tiles, and the light that comes off the river is unusually bright and clean. Its steep streets and small squares make portraits feel found rather than staged. Sintra, in the hills just outside, is the opposite: forest, mist and romantic palaces, soft and green even in high summer.
The Algarve is cliffs of ochre rock, sheltered coves and whitewashed towns, with quintas and villas set back from the sea. The coast faces south, the season is long and the evenings are warm. In the north, Porto is granite and river, with the port lodges across the water and the terraced vineyards of the Douro Valley upstream, at their most photogenic during the autumn harvest.
Portuguese weddings are warm, family-centred and unhurried. A long lunch or dinner, generous food and wine, and dancing that carries on late is the usual shape of the day. It is an easy country to photograph in: relaxed, welcoming and never in a hurry to end the evening.
Practicalities
Before you plan
The season runs from May to October, and the Algarve stays warm for longer than almost anywhere else in Europe. Lisbon and the coast around it are pleasant from spring to autumn, while the north is greener and wetter, with September and October bringing the Douro harvest. For peak summer dates, booking nine to fifteen months ahead is typical.
Civil marriage in Portugal is possible for foreign couples through the civil registry, but the documents take time to prepare and must be arranged well in advance. Many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Portugal instead. Your planner or the civil registry will confirm what applies to you.
Trains link Lisbon with Porto and with the Algarve, and Faro airport serves the south directly. Sintra and Cascais are close to Lisbon by road or train. The Douro Valley and the quieter parts of the Algarve are easiest by car.

How much does a wedding photographer cost in Portugal?
Our weddings in Portugal start at €1,450 for Half Day coverage of up to five hours with one photographer, €2,250 for Full Day coverage of up to ten hours, and €2,950 for a Destination Wedding covering the full day. Elopements start at €850. Travel and accommodation are quoted separately, itemised and at cost, and exact pricing is on request through the inquiry form.
Can we marry legally in Portugal?
Generally yes, through the civil registry, but the documents need to be prepared well in advance. Many couples find it simpler to marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Portugal. Your planner or the civil registry will confirm the requirements for your nationalities.
Can you photograph in Sintra’s palaces?
The palaces and their gardens are managed monuments, each with its own rules for professional photography, so it depends on the place and needs checking in advance. The town, the forest roads and the viewpoints around them give a great deal of Sintra’s atmosphere without the same restrictions.
Is the Atlantic coast too windy for an outdoor dinner?
Not usually, but it can be cooler and breezier than couples expect, especially on the coast west of Lisbon. A venue with a sheltered courtyard or a covered terrace as a second option makes the evening easier. The south coast of the Algarve is generally calmer and warmer.
When should we book for a summer wedding in Portugal?
Nine to fifteen months ahead is typical for a Saturday in June or September. The long Algarve season means May and October are good alternatives, and they are easier to secure at shorter notice.
Do you photograph elopements in Lisbon?
Yes. Our Elopement commission starts at €850 for two hours with one photographer, with help planning the route and the hour. Early morning is the quietest time for Lisbon’s viewpoints and old streets, and the light off the river is at its softest then.
