Monastero Santa Rosa occupies a seventeenth-century monastery on the cliff at Conca dei Marini, between Amalfi and Positano. The building is small — it was a convent for a closed order, not a palace — and its gardens are cut into five terraces on the cliff face, dropping towards a sea some way below. It has been a hotel since 2012, with a little over twenty rooms.
The scale is the point. Thick monastic stone means the interiors stay cool and dim through the hours when the terraces are unusable, which between June and September on this coast is most of the afternoon. That gives a day two distinct settings with two distinct light conditions, and it means there is somewhere to be at two o’clock that is not full sun on a cliff. The terraced garden, planted with herbs and lemon, gives a series of small, enclosed frames rather than one grand view.
A wedding here suits a short guest list and a slow day. The rooms hold a party of that size comfortably and would be crowded by a larger one. Plan the ceremony for late afternoon on a terrace, use the cloistered interior through the heat, and treat the sea as a background that is always there rather than a location to travel to.
