The Grand Hotel Tremezzo is a belle-époque hotel on the western shore at Tremezzina, directly opposite Bellagio. It opened in 1910 and still reads that way: a tall pale façade, terraces stacked above the road, and a lawn and pool running out to the water. Being a hotel rather than a private villa, it can house a wedding party as well as hold the wedding, which removes a great deal of transfer planning from the day.

Its orientation is the thing to build the timeline around. The hotel faces east across the water, so its own terraces go into the shade of the ridge behind them well before the sun has actually set. Bellagio, on the far shore, stays lit for a good while longer. That means the background keeps its light after the foreground has lost it — excellent for a portrait made looking across the water, and a problem for a ceremony placed on the terrace too late in the evening.

The practical version: put the ceremony early enough that the terrace is still lit, and save the portraits for the window afterwards, when the far shore is glowing and the near shore is soft. The lakefront lawn, the pool terrace and the hotel’s interior stair give three different registers without leaving the property, which keeps a full day varied without a single transfer.
