Villa Balbiano is a baroque villa at Ossuccio, on the western shore just north of Lenno, with a formal garden running down to a private landing on the water. The house is seventeenth-century in origin and the interiors were decorated to match: frescoed ceilings, painted walls, heavy stone floors and tall shuttered windows that are the only source of light in most of the rooms.

Those interiors are the reason to come and the reason to plan carefully. Painted rooms were built to be seen by daylight falling through a window, and they photograph beautifully that way — deep, warm, with the fresco holding its colour. A flash bounced into the corner flattens the paint and kills exactly what makes the room worth standing in. The practical consequence is that getting ready and any indoor ceremony should be placed in the hours when those windows are doing real work, not late in the evening.

Outside, the garden is axial and symmetrical, with statuary, clipped hedging and a straight run to the lake. It gives a formal, composed kind of portrait that the wilder shoreline villas do not, and the private landing means the boat can be part of the day without a public quay in the frame. The two registers — painted interior and formal garden — are close enough together that a single hour can cover both.
