Villa del Balbianello sits on the tip of the Dosso d’Avedo promontory, a wooded finger of land that pushes out into the lake where the Como and Lecco arms divide. That position is the whole of its character: the loggia at the top looks down two stretches of water at once, and there is no road to it. Guests arrive by boat from Lenno, or on foot along the path through the woods from the Lido di Lenno, and everything else — flowers, chairs, dinner, the cake — arrives the same way.

For photography the promontory is unusually generous. Because the villa stands on a point rather than a shoreline, the sun crosses it rather than setting behind a ridge, and there is usable light on one face or the other for most of the day. The loggia is open on all sides and frames the lake without a single competing building. The terraced garden below gives stone, ivy and the plane trees clipped flat over the stairs, which is a different picture entirely, thirty seconds’ walk away.

What the place asks for in return is a timeline built around boats. The villa is open to the public for much of the day and weddings are held in a limited window, so the hours are fixed before anything else is decided. Portraits are best planned for the end of the ceremony, while the boat is still waiting, rather than left to a gap later in the evening that the timetable will not allow. Anyone planning here should treat the crossing as part of the schedule and not as a transfer.
