Villa Cetinale stands in the hills west of Siena, a baroque house of the 1680s set on a strict axis: the garden runs straight out from the front of the villa, and behind it the Scala Santa climbs the wooded hillside in a single flight of stone steps to a hermitage at the top. That axis is not a landscaping detail — it is the organising fact of the whole property.

It also hands a photographer a composition without asking for one. Late in the day the sun runs along the axis rather than across it, lighting the garden, the façade and the foot of the stair together, and a couple walking that line has depth, symmetry and a vanishing point built into the frame. The wooded slope behind gives cool shade at the hours the garden is too bright, and the house itself gives shuttered rooms and stone stairs.

The garden is formal and the scale is generous but not vast, which suits a guest list in the low hundreds. The practical instruction is simple: know where the axis points and what time the light gets there, and put the portraits in that window rather than wherever a gap appears in the schedule. It is the one thing about this property that cannot be improvised on the day.
